Josh chaired the meeting.  He’s currently renovating his 1848 house at Johnson’s Mills and gave some history of its previous occupants, McReadys and McFaddens. One lived to be 103 – maybe it’s something in the water (there is an old well on the property).

50-50 Draw: Wynn was back for a visit; his number was drawn, and he promptly picked the 8 of Hearts, entitling him to the pot of $215.

Honorary member: Pat Estabrooks.

Gold Mine Draw :  Heather Dixon was on hand to receive from Tammie a Gold Mine cheque for $662.50 on behalf of Marshview Middle School.  Heather expressed her thanks; some of the money has gone to the school’s culinary class which now provides muffins and pancakes for the breakfast program.

Happy Dollars:  Wynn recommended the movie “Wonder,” one of the most moving movies he has ever seen.  He was glad to be back to win the draw, but not so happy about the weather.  And he was happy about the election result in Alabama: it’s important to vote for the best person.  He also was happy to be back to get his hair cut.  Louise survived a cookie decorating party.  Gayle was happy to be back after a twins age 10 party; she also saw former members Bruno and Johann, who send their best wishes.  Bill is about to take off for Newfoundland to visit family.  Dianne thanked everyone who donated books; we now have about 40 in stock; some smaller books would be appreciated. Ove is off to ski in the Laurentians, but alas they lost their golden retriever.  Trish looks forward to Bill and Sandra arriving next Thursday.  Sandy was happy to see a quick visit by Leslie – in time to celebrate George’s birthday.

Next Week: 7 December 2017.  Chair: substitute for Joyce;  Greeter: George;  Introducer: Sandy;  Thanker: substitute for Wynn;  Speaker: Stephanie Le Breton, “Sackville Swim Club.”

Rotary Bell:  In 1943 the Rotary Club of Sackville sponsored the Rotary Club of Springhill and presented them with a brass Rotary Bell. In 1949 we sponsored the Rotary Club of Port Elgin, however they never received a Rotary Bell.  Earlier this year the Rotary Club of Springhill agreed to disband; they also agreed to donate their Rotary bell to the Rotary Club of Port Elgin.  The bell was never engraved, so our club agreed to pay for engraving it with the dates and name of Springhill, and Port Elgin's name and beginning date. The bell was presented to the Port Elgin club at their Christmas Party on 7 December.

George Trueman, president of the Rotary Club of Port Elgin receives the bell from Dwight Gallagar, last president of the Rotary Club of Springhill (holding the Rotary Bell).

Curl for Cancer: Rotary had a team in last year.  If you are interested in participating this year please contact Dianne.

Canada 150 Nickel:  Pam reported that she had presented a PHF to Gerard Gloade, designer of the new Canadian nickel to celebrate Canada 150.

New nickel coins were distributed to all present; they feature a beaver, a reminder that Canada’s first currency was beaver pelts.

President’s Time:  With regret John announced that a letter has been received from Joyce with her resignation from the club, because of health problems arising from the fall which she heard.  She asked to continue receiving the bulletin, which we are more than happy to arrange.

Speaker:  Ove introduced Stephane Robichaud CEO of the NB Health Council who gave a PowerPoint presentation on “The State of the N.B. Health System.”  The Council, which was formed in 2008, consists of 12 members, 50% of whom are drawn from the community. It seeks to address the following questions: What is the health status of our population?  How effective are our health services? Is our health system sustainable?

The lack of provincial indicators presents a challenge. The Council has conducted a series of provincial dialogue sessions on e.g. “Provincial Health Plan” (2012) and “Living Healthy, Aging Well” (2013). Surveys have also been conducted on “Acute Care Services,” “Primary Health Services,” and “Home Care Services,” as well as a series of Student Wellness Surveys conducted on a 3 year cycle (with approximately 100,000 respondents).
The main health determinants of the populations are: Health services (10%), Health behaviours (40%), Social and Economic Factors (40%), and Physical Environment (10%).  Results of surveys are tabulated in terms of 33 N.B. communities, as well as by provincial health zones.  The use of emergency room services, and the time it takes to get an appointment with your family doctor are studied in relation to other jurisdictions in Canada. Hopefully all the information gathered will lead to improved health and health services in the province.
