Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin - June 28, 2018

Dianne was in the Chair today, subbing for a vacationing Darrell.  John had a measure of revenge today as he got to time Dianne's 3-minute "bio".  In Dianne's role of sergeant-at arms, she usually got to time John and appropriately cut him off.  Dianne decided to talk about a former member - Joe Atkinson.  Newer members will have no recollection of Joe, but older members will recall fondly of Joe's weekly "words of wisdom", a club feature for over 20 years.  Dianne showed the book that Sandy put together several years ago that captured Joe's weekly contributions and Dianne read several.

Guests for breakfast were our speakers, Heather MacIntyre and Charlie Rhindress.  From South Lake Florida, we welcomed Rotarian Sharon Meldrum.  For makeups, Tammy & Louise attended a Club Runner training session at Wayne's house on Wednesday and Pam attended the Rotary Conference in Toronto.  Both Pin Pal Stories and Birthdays were in short supply this week'
Tammy had the winning ticket this week, but the winning was short lived.  Looking for the Queen of  she picked the 3 of  and missed out on $111.  Forty percent of attending members had Happy $'s this week.  Gayle started of by thanking Tammy for help while she was away and she noted how many Rotarians she saw on Toronto streets as they attended the Rotary Conference...........Louise was happy as today was her last day working - she's taking the summer off............Sharon was unhappy about the morning meetings but glad to be here anyway given what "hairboy" is doing in the States...........Bill was doubly happy - today was his 43rd wedding anniversary and he was glad to be back from five weeks in Bytown (Ottawa)..........Marita was happy she was sharing her 38th wedding anniversary with parents..........Trish was happy to be off to Ontario to see former member Becky Stewart..............Ove was happy that he was made a life member of the New Brunswick Bar last weekend.  This brought Pat home from the cottage in the Laurentians where she has been for several months............John was happy that he and Gemey will embark on a 5-week holiday to the US beginning this weekend.  He was dismayed to learn that he was still President as he had pinned Louise as incoming President last week.  He can smile July 1st.
There were two cheque presentations this week.  At the meeting, the left photo shows Josh Cormier picking up a cheque for $600 on behalf of the Dorchester Food Bank.  The right picture shows Paul Embree,  the big winner from June 18th draw,  picking up his cheque for $1,225 from Rotarian Edna Boland at the June 25th draw.

Committee Reports - The Admin committee thru Dianne advised members of a fun golf tournament scheduled for Sunday, August 12 at 2 pm at the Sackville Golf & County Club.  This is a fun day and attendees do not have to be golfers.  Special green fees will be in place and a BBQ will follow.  Bring out the whole family for this one.  Members were also asked to mark their calendars for the annual Lobster Party on August 26th at Susan Purdy's cottage..........Josh reported on the Legacy committee's meeting.  They are planning to document the projects that are being considered and to make a presentation to the club during a special meeting in November, December or January.

Today was President John's last official meeting in the role and he chose happy events.  John is shown presenting a 10-year certificate of service to Gayle Key and a 5-year certificate of service to Bill Evans.  These are a continuation of the service awards from last weeks BBQ.
To help kick off a club legacy project in the future, Honorary Member Carla Newbold wanted to be among the first to donate to the fund.  John is shown presenting the cheque to Legacy Committee Chair Josh.

This third picture of Josh shows him introducing our guest speaker - Charlie Rhindress.

Charlie was a founding partner in Live Bait Theatre along with Randy White and Karen Valanne almost 30 years ago.  He left 10 years ago for Halifax and a stint at Neptune Theatre, acting on Trailer Park Boys and Mr D and returned to the area in 2015 and is living in Dorchester.  Charlie was here today to talk about two books - one written and one in the works.  The completed book is titled I'm Not What I Seem and is the story of Rita McNeil, written after her death in 2013.  Charlie read from the forward of the book detailing how he came to know Rita and the side of her most people do not know about.  Details were also forthcoming on how Charlie came to know and appreciate the music ability of Rita.  This led him to wanting to write a play about Rita, which he did.  Rita eventually approved of the play and it was the highest grossing production ever of Live bait Theatre.
A prolific songwriter, her Working Man is one that usually get tears running when it is performed.  Charlie's partner, Heather MacIntyre performed her version to a bunch of teary-eyed members.
Charlie's newest adventure is another book, this time on Stompin' Tom Connors.  It will reveal things the average person does not know about Stompin' Tom - how he studied the Koran and was writing a book on Theology at his death.  Heather performed another Stompin' Tom song, unlike what people were used to - a song called Wawa

Charlie and Heather were thanked by Paticia
The meeting was adjourned by reciting the 4-way-test.
