Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin May 23, 2019

Chair: Josh Cormier who reflected on his time as a student at Dorchester School and the teachers who nurtured his love for learning.  A quote from one teacher in particular he has not forgotten: "If you cut a wide path  you won't go far, but if you cut a narrow path you co anywhere you want in this world."

Guests and Visiting Rotarians:  Marilyn Prescott (Port Elgin RC), Hannah Ehler (Mount Allison Rotaract), Shayne Mann who recently moved to Sackville from Ontario and his family members visiting from Grand Bend, Ontario: Martin Ward (past DG D.6330) and his wife Mary Ruston (Passport On-line Club D.6330)

Make-Ups: Our intrepid all-that-is-good-about-Rotary member Pam Harrison visited the Moncton West-Riverview Club to promote the June 1 walk to end Polio in the Sackville Waterfowl Park.   The faithful counters of the toonies also once again met on Monday, May 20 at The Commons.

Not a PinPal Story to be had this week

Birthdays: A rousing rendition of Happy Birthday was sung to Bill Evans who celebrates his natal day on June 26.

50-50 Draw:  Much to the chagrin of some members we were looking for the 10 of Hearts.  Ticket #331 was drawn but unfortunately for ticket holder John Murchie he drew the 3 of Diamonds so did not take home the $25.00 pot.

Cheque Presentation:  Ryan Estabrooks was happy to receive a cheque from the Rotary Gold Mine for $636.50 on behalf of Dorchester School.

Happy Dollars: Wow were we a happy group today!
1. Wynne - really only semi-happy.  While no longer suffering, his canine companion of 15 years was put to rest earlier in the week.
2. Martin - happy to be back in Canada after 5 weeks abroad and to be visiting his sister and brother-in-law in Sackville
3. Marilyn - promoted the Port Elgin club's walk-a-thon to send local children to camp scheduled for a purported to be sunny Saturday, May 25th

4. Dianne - let us all know that we could order Rotary Polio tulip bulbs from the most recent Vessey's catalogue (inside front cover) … the more you order, the cheaper they get!

5. Sandy - her 'companion' of 4 weeks is gone as of this afternoon!
6. Sue - she and Dave are back to Europe for the wedding of a youth exchange student...hoping that they don't have to receive the Air Canada consolation prize of a 600 Euros and a suitcase this time.
7. Bill - headed to Ottawa to celebrate his birthday and the birthday of his grand daughter (of course the most beautiful and talented grand child of them all!)  Bill also reminded us of the Walk in the Park for Alzheimers Sunday, May 26.

Next Week's Meeting:
Chair: Lesley Lawton
Greeter: Pam Harrison
Introducer: Patricia Belliveau
Thanker: Wayne Harper
Speaker: David Mawhinney, archivist at Mount Allison University

Committee Reports & Meetings:
Club Administration:  At our meeting next week, May 30th we will begin at Joey's for breakfast then proceed to the Mount Allison University library for David Mawhinney's presentation following breakfast.
Foundation: Reminder to gather at 08:30 on June 1 at the Sackville Tourist Bureau decked out in your red t-shirts for our Walk to End Polio.  Other local clubs have been invited and plan to join us.  We will take a group photo at 09:00 and plan to walk the ~3km route around the Waterfowl Park as of 09:10.  The photo will be forwarded to the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany and to UNICEF to be shared as a thank you to the thousands of polio vaccination volunteers in Pakistan.
Incoming Rotary Board:  will meet on Saturday morning, May 25th

President's Time: During the District President's call Louise encouraged participation in the 1 June Walk to end Polio.  The District Conference to be held in Fredericton this fall was also discussed, as was a plea for volunteers to help clean up Camp Rotary.

Speaker: Pam introduced our esteemed speaker, Dr. Catherine Lovekin of the Mount Allison University Physics Department and a NASA Astronomer!  As of July 1, 2019 Dr. Lovekin will also become the first woman to be tenured in the Mount A. Physics department.

Dr. Lovekin spoke to us about the "Life Cycle of a Nova and how stars evolve" and how she and a team of international colleagues catptured the entire life cycle of Nova Asassn - 18 FN by "watching the sky".  Suffice it to say it was an illuminating presentation but contained far more physics for this mere mortal to delve into. A take home message, there are often public talks and viewings at the Mount A. observatory and Dr. Lovekin and the Observatory can be contacted at gemini@mta.ca

Trish thanked Dr. Lovekin and commented that if she had been a prof at Queen's University Trish may only have had to take physics once!

The meeting concluded with the recitation of the 4-Way Test.
