Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin - March 29, 2018

Today was a Club Assembly and John was in the Chair.  John elected not to continue the saga of Mr. Murchie Sr., instead expressing his thanks for Sackville being listed as an "age friendly place".

We had two guest Rotarians visit the Club this morning.  From the Rotary Club of St. John's East, Dave Allison (L) joined us, as did Rob Christie (R) from the Rotary Club of Pictou, who is also the incoming District Governor of District 7820.   Non Rotarian guests numbered just one this week - Rob Christie's son Adam, a past guest and former speaker at our Club.
There were no Pin-Pal stories this week but make ups were earned by the Gold Mine Committee and those attending the Rotaract Curling Bonspiel last Sunday.
This scribe admitted to being another year older this coming Saturday.
The 50-50 draw had Darrell trying to bank the $100 pot this week.  He needed to find the 5 of .  He drew the 5 OK, but in .
Many members were happy this week starting with Charlie.  He thanked everyone for the good wishes and the food delivered as Jean recovers from surgery.  He admitted that this will be a long recovery..............Patricia was happy that, even with our high gasoline prices, they are still much cheaper than in South Africa.............Ove was happy as he is going to the cottage for some serious skiing in the Laurentians...............George was happy that he survived Baseball's opening day.  He  also reported that the special event for Frankie-the-Weiner-Dog went well last Thursday...........Sue Purdy was happy as she received a phone call from an old classmate inquiring whether she was going to the 50-year reunion later this year.  Her answer was yes............Susan Fisher was happy that the curling bonspiel (Rotaractors) went well with many club members attending.  She also mentioned that she delivered the Swim Club's cheque from the Gold Mine Draw and how excited the young members were.  The picture of the swimmers receiving the cheque was taken and is now on our web site..........Gayle was happy that she is going to Sherbrooke QC to see former club members Joanne and Bruno Gnassi and then will go on to Montreal to visit family.........Stacey was happy that her parents are returning to the Maritimes to live (Berwick) and will spend the weekend visiting............Lastly, Edna was happy that her daughter was coming to visit for the weekend.
As usual,  the Club was proud to present cheques from the Gold Mine Draw.

The highlight of today's meeting was the induction of Erin Penney.  As in the past, Charlie formally led the induction.  He started by giving the history of Rotary, how it was started in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris, who wanted a method by which business people of all stripes could meet regularly to discuss common problems or to just enjoy the fellowship.  The meetings moved to a different location each week - hence the name Rotary.  He discussed the evolution of the Rotary Logo - the Wheel and how there were three iterations before finally settling on today's design in 1929.  Rotary became international with the beginning of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg in 1911.  Rotary is the largest service club in the world with over 1.2 million members in 33,000 + clubs worldwide.  Giving back to the community where the club resides has always been a goal of Rotary.  Our Club is no different having conceived the Lillas Fawcett Rotary Parks, the Bridge at Mount Allison University, the Booster Pump, the flag pole at the public library and the Lookout at the Waterfowl Park, to name a few. At the conclusion,  sponsor Wayne introduced Erin to the members by sharing that Erin was born and bred in Halifax, attended Memorial University and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry.  She worked for the Federal Government and came to Sackville in 2011, where she is a laboratory instructor in the Biology department at MTA.  She volunteers in the community, the Canadian Cancer Society and will be directing an enrichment program for high school students at MTA this July.  President John presented and pinned Erin with her Rotary pin.  The entire Club welcomed Erin to the Club in the traditional manner - rising and shaking her hand.
Following the ceremony, John led a discussion into Literacy and how he was encouraged to read by his grade 6 teacher.  As he grows older, reading enriches his mind and relaxes his inhibitions.  John would like to establish a program whereby Club members could encourage or tutor students to read like his old grade 6 teacher did with him.  This represents the Service part of Rotary's being.

The meeting concluded with the 4-way test.
