Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin October 25, 2018
Dianne stepped in as chair at the last moment and gave some of her impressions of a wonderful Rotary District Conference last weekend, singling out especially keynote speaker Sally Armstrong, and two polio survivors in armchairs one with post-polio syndrome [ Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that affects polio survivors years after recovery from an initial acute attack of the poliomyelitis virus.]

Birthdays:  Both Tammy and Patricia were a year older and were suitably serenaded.

50-50 Draw: Tammy’s number was drawn, but she failed to pick the Queen of Spades, so the pot of $260 carries forward to next week.

PinPal Stories: Wynn met Barb and Frank Chisholm in Truro.  While there he noted a copy of the Four Way Test in the arena, placed by the Rotary Club of Truro.

Happy Dollars:  Patricia had a great visit with her brother Philip. She is hoping that next Monday which is her birthday will be her lucky day (the Gold Mine draw is expected to be over $11,000).  Pam contributed a chocolate toonie; the left-over coupons from MacDonalds were given to Gayle to pass on to the food bank.  Wynn gave a highly technical report (for non-curlers) on the latest exploits of the Nova Scotia Junior Girls curling team.   By next week he will be down south, on the first tee, ready to go. For the information of Ove and Josh he has just finished writing a 48 page brief (Josh thought he must be getting paid by the page).  Louise reported on a very successful and happy visit with Mariah to Camp Brigadoon (near Aylesford, N.S.). Tammy greatly enjoyed the District Conference which she found very motivating and encouraging. Her son and girl-friend are coming this weekend.

Next Week: 1 November 2018:   Chair: Ove;  Greeter: Pat P;  Introducer: Tammy;  Thanker: Darrell;  Speaker: Philip MacNeil – “Travels in Turkey.”

District Conference:  Our club was well represented by Pam, Pat P, Tammy, Erin, and Dianne (seen above with Marilyn Prescott).

A highlight was the presentation of two award certificates . . .

one for our club’s financial support of the End Polio Now: Countdown to History Campaign . . .

and one for reaching Rotary International’s Club Polio Goal.

World Polio Day:  Pam reported on the success of our World Polio Day event at the Vogue Theatre on the evening of 24 October, which focussed on the showing of the movie “Breathe.”

Rotarians from Port Elgin, Amherst, Dieppe and Moncton joined club members and friends to promote and support the END POLIO NOW campaign.  Also present were the parents of UNICEF/WHO worker Melissa Corkum.

Our club received 28 individual donations for a total of $2,882.60.  From our in-house Foundation Auction we raised $2,200 which the club matched with another $2,200. Other clubs in the District made donations:  Dieppe - $1000,  Moncton West Riverview – $3,000, Amherst - $2,600, and Port Elgin - $360.  Factoring in the very generous matching funds from the Gates Foundation the total raised by the event came to $68,577 !   Pam was thanked for all the great work she did in organizing the event.

Susan F reported that the dictionary projects are going ahead for both Salem and Dorchester schools; help will be needed and members will be contacted by email.

Speaker:  Susan F introduced the speaker, who really needed no introduction – David Bruce, Director of Research at Mount A, who has spoken to the club on seven previous occasions.  This time his theme was “Joys of Teleworking and Alternate Workforce Arrangements.”  This idea is not new, but David has been working with the arrangement since January 2015.  Resident in New Glasgow, he works in his Mount A office Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from home Mondays and Wednesdays.

Extensive use of phone and email helps make this possible, and many people on campus don’t notice that he is not there a couple of days a week. It does involve commuting from New Glasgow but the drive offers time to think and to relax.

Unfortunately (for us) David is leaving Mount A shortly and going to work at St.FX.  Since starting as a student in 1985 he has served Mount A in a number of capacities.  He loves Sackville and has been involved in various local organizations.  We will miss him !

Dale expressed thank on behalf of the club and made the usual presentation; a copy of People of the Tantramar will be going to each of the three Sackville schools.

The meeting closed with the Four Way Test.

Gold Mine Presentation:  Heidi Lafford came by to accept from Susan F a cheque for $782 on behalf of the Tantramar Family Resource Centre.
