Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin - July 12, 2018

  Photographs by Pam Harrison

Our Chair this week was Darrell, who touched on patriotism, philosophy and humour in his remarks.  After the singing of the national anthem, led by Pam, and a heartfelt prayer, he had us all in giggles with a personal anecdote of 3 canoes, a very tolerant wife and another man in his clothes (worth getting up early!).
We were happy to have Ron Kelly-Spurles, Susan Amos and Creek Martin as our guests.  We were joined by visiting Rotarians Bill McLeish of the Ottawa club, Marilyn Prescott from Port Elgin and Sharon Meldrum from the Lakeland, Florida clubs.
There were no makeups, pinpal stories or birthdays.
The 50-50 pot stands at $128!  And, alas, is still growing as Pat drew the 2 of clubs and not the winning Queen of Spades.
Wynn cheered us up, though, with his first Happy Toonie by noting that he is happy to be part of such an intelligent group.  His second toonie marks a reminder that he likes nothing better than to be called early on Thursday mornings to take a turn as greeter.  Darrell thanked Wayne for taking on his treasurer duties in his absence and also appreciated the convivial dinner he enjoyed last Sunday with Mary, Dan, Trish and Bruce. Dale chipped in his change to welcome his son, daughter, in-laws and grandchild for a family visit.  Stacey is officiating at a wedding for the first time this Saturday.  Bill was grateful to buy the “winning” ticket for the pottery prize from the Port Elgin Club draw.  Pam put a smile on his face by promising to give the pottery bowl from her “winning” ticket to welcome Bill and his wife to Sackville.
Bill was thrilled to be able to present a cheque for $614.00 to his long-time friend Susan Amos, for the Tantramar Heritage Trust.

Marita introduced this week’s speaker, Cynthia Spurles, Live Bait Theatre Chair.
Live Bait theatre is celebrating their 30th season this year with popular shows such as Cole, Billy Bishop Goes to War, Uh, Oh Canada.  A striking logo has been designed by Creek Martin.   Cynthia encouraged us to check the website for dates and tickets before the shows sell out.
2019 will be the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Intercontinental Railway in Sackville.  It was established by the BNA Act of 1867 and connected NS, NB, QC and ON, arriving in Sackville on Nov 23, 1869.  Due to the receipt of a heritage grant, extensive events are planned for the 150th celebration in Sackville including music, plays, train-related art exhibits, traincraft, a points of interest tour and a model railroad.
These anniversaries have inspired the Tantramar Heritage Trust and Live Bait theatre to partner with the Town of Sackville to refurbish the Sackville train station to its heyday and make it available for community events and also as a venue for Live Bait Theatre performances.  In this regards, it would be greatly appreciated if our club would consider a $15,000 sponsorship (over several years) in order to help bring this project to reality for the community to enjoy into the future.
Sandy thanked Cynthia for her presentation.
The meeting was adjourned by reciting the 4-way-test.
