Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin August 9, 2018

George was our Chair this week, and he and Pam led the club in singing the national anthem and offering a prayer of thankfulness.
George meant to mention that August is MEMBERSHIP MONTH and all Rotarians are asked to think of possible members in an effort to increase the club's membership by 5% - so in our case we should seek two new members. Maybe set a goal of 10% which is three members.
Our Greeter this morning was present in spirit but either flying high or laying low.
Guests for breakfast were our speakers, Katherine Rice and Catherine Priemer, Susan Lafford, and visiting Rotarian June Woodburn of the Timmins Rotary Club.  Happy Birthday, June, the notably younger sister of George!
Happy Birthday also to our own Club Member, Susan P!
Guest speaker Catherine Priemer drew the ticket for this week's 50/50 draw.  Mary was lucky enough to have her ticket drawn, but her luck ran out when she drew the 3 of spades in pursuit of the Queen of spades.  The pot will grow again next week from its current value of $168.00.  Good luck to all next week.
Happy Toonies:
Wynn, always happy (smart!), relayed Sharon’s delight at winning the pottery bowl from the Port Elgin Club’s raffle…..he also is happily looking forward to everyone joining in for the Club’s Fun Golf Tourney on Sunday….Bill is looking forward to his visit to Ottawa next week to enjoy his granddaughter….Charlie thanked everyone who purchased advance copies of his new book, and we’re all happy he’s returned to meetings….Dianne will be away the remainder of August and back in September (happy she’s going away or happy she’ll be back??)…...    Dianne was tickled to celebrate the book launch Life of Heber H. Hatfield, entrepreneur and politician and her grandfather.….Susan & David generously hosted a “Bente” pot luck on Monday….thanks from Darrell to those who covered his duties while he was away….June, our visiting Rotarian is establishing a Gold Mine draw at her home club of Timmins – we wish you much success!
Cheque Presentation:
Susan Lafford, principal of Tantramar High School, accepted our cheque for $603.50 presented by Susan, and graciously thanked the club for their support of her school.

Susan introduced this week’s speakers, Catherine Priemer and Katharine Rice.
Katherine thanked the club members for the opportunity to attend the Rotaract International conference in June in Toronto.  She explained how at home she was made to feel when she first moved to Sackville to attend Mount Allison when she saw the Rotary emblem attached to the bridge and the booster pump.  Katherine was familiar with Rotary as there were 4 Rotary clubs in her part of Vancouver when she was growing up.  This coming year, Katherine will be heading up the core group of 12 – 15 active Rotaractors and and another dozen students who volunteer for specific activities.  Her knowledge and enthusiasm as a change maker will mark her leadership this year.
Catherine  spent 4 days in Ottawa at Rotary Adventures in Citizenship 2018 with 200 other high school students, from all across Canada.  The Wabano Centre was a highlight for her, with indigenous activists presenting history and insights.  Catherine was also proud of her fellow citizens when new citizens to Canada were applauded and welcomed.  Food for thought:  what does it mean to be Canadian?  Catherine’s answer:  freedom of thought, belief and expression and inclusivity of all.
Our speakers were thanked by Bill, with the book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” being donated to a local school library in their names.
The meeting concluded with the 4-way test.
