Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin June 7, 2018

Photographer: Pam

Charlie was in the chair and entertained the newer members with his story about attending the RI Convention in Rome in 1979.

50-50 Draw:   David’s number was drawn; he picked a Queen, but not the right one, so the pot of $90 carries forward to next week.

Gold Mine Winner.  Valerie Melanson was on hand to collect his winnings of $3,774 from Sandy.

Happy Dollars:  Charlie is happy that the advance sales campaign for his forthcoming book People of the Tantramar is underway.  Publication date is 21 September, but the printing costs have to be paid in full by 16 July.  Copies can be ordered and paid for in advance at a discount price.   Assistant District Governor Pam was at the Port Elgin club for the induction of 5 new members !  Patricia had her girls over last Friday for a successful BBQ despite the gale force winds.   Wynn was glad to have his first round of golf (in Canada) for 2018. He was also happy to buy a copy of Charlie’s book. Trish’s trip to Portland was postponed by one day - another day to spend with Bruce.   Dianne was at the Canadian Pharmacy Association conference in Fredericton (one speaker was Mary Walsh). She also helped her brother and niece celebrate their birthdays (on the same day).   John was happy that so many members were happy enough to donate happy dollars.

Next Week: 14 June 2018:   Chair: Dale   Greeter: Dale   Introducer: John   Thanker: Pam.

Million Dollar Campaign: Pam provided information on the Districts 7810/7820 Million Dollar Campaign and Celebration Dinner scheduled for 2 May 2019, including different ways to support this ambitious effort.

Projects Committee:  Stacey invited members to attend Projects Committee meetings on the first Monday of each month after the Toonie Count at approximately 5:45 p.m.

TRHS Bursaries:  John reported on the tough job he, Edna and Rachel Thornton had in choosing 3 bursary recipients out of 15 applications, all of them deserving.

Breakfast Program:  Susan F thanked Rotary volunteers Trish, Gayle, Sandy, Edna, Dianne and John who helped serve breakfast at Marshview Middle School. The Rotaract club will continue to support this program next year.

BBQ:  On 21 June, at Dianne’s. No morning meeting that day.

President’s Time:  John announced that the first annual Rotary Golf event will be held on Sunday 12 August.  Also: to generate more money for club funds, starting next Rotary year (1 July), a) the other half of the 50/50 money will go to club funds rather than the Rotary Foundation, and b) Happy Dollars will be replaced by Happy Toonies !

Dianne introduced speaker Tammy who gave her classification talk. Born, raised and educated in Sackville she spent 10 years in Toronto where she graduated from Ryerson with a nursing degree. She worked for two years in Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, serving varying shifts in different parts of the facility. In 1997 she decided to return to Sackville, and worked in hospitals in Sackville, Amherst and Moncton. Most of the jobs involved a lot of stress and increasingly she felt that Nursing was not for her.

After a period of stress leave, Tammy decided on a change of occupation and went for a year to barber school. Supported by her family – husband Robert, and Megan, Conrad and Devon, she set up her own business, “Steel Clippers Barbershop” in the centre of Sackville. Her first customer was President John.

The most important thing in life, she has found, is to find the correct balance between work, family and community. Thanks to some encouragement from Mary (another of her customers) she joined Rotary last October and greatly enjoys the opportunities for both making friends and serving the community.

Ove expressed thanks to Tammy, noting that classification talks are often the most interesting, this one being no exception.

The meeting closed with the Four Way Test.
