Tim was in the chair and welcomed a large attendance.
50-50 Draw: We are now looking for the Queen of Spades. However, Mary drew the 7 of Diamonds, so the pot of $12 carries forward to next week.
Visiting Rotarian: Sharon from South Lake County Club, Florida.
Makeups: Wynn had a whole sheaf of makeups, 7 from the South Lake County Club, and one from New York City Chinatown where special food was served to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Pam is claiming a make-up for meeting with Marilyn Prescott (next to her here) and one gal in the front row who is a member of the Rotary Club of Sackville, NS. They discussed going to the RI Conference in Toronto this June. Says Pam, “I think that three Rotarians discussing Rotary business is considered a make up. If not it is a good story. Rotary does make the world a little smaller.”
PinPal Stories: At a nephew’s funeral on Saturday Dianne met Rob Porter, secretary of the new Wolfville Mud Creek club.
Happy Dollars: Nicole was happy that her sister in engaged, and has moved to Sackville, two down from where she stays. John told Joeys to expect 27; 27 showed up ! Wynn was glad to be back for the summer, though he has still to unpack and get caught up on the Trib. His granddaughter has added another curling gold medal. Trish was glad spring is almost here – time for G & T on the front porch. Sharon is not so glad to be back in Sackville – unless someone turns up the heat.
Dianne drew attention to the article in this week’s Trib – a well-deserved tribute to Susan F, and great PR for Rotary and Rotaract.
Next Week: 19 April 2018: Chair: Tony; Greeter: Tim; Introducer: Darrell; Thanker: Pam ?; Speaker: Amanda Marlin.
Fundraising: Jamie reminded everyone of the Spring Bash on 12 May. Tickets and posters are still available.
President’s Time: John announced that the annual Lobster Party will be held on 26 August at Susan P’s cottage. Our special meetings (school library, sleigh ride, Open Sky) have been well received, and more are in the works.
Sackville Minor Hockey: President John was invited to the Sackville Minor Hockey banquet where he received a thank you plaque for our support of the club.
Marshview Breakfast Program: David and Susan F left early to help feed 50 kids at Marshview. The program is run by Rotaract, but since it is exam time, they have asked for help from Rotary. If you can help, speak to Susan.
Speaker: Dale introduced Nicole Naish, Investment Advisor with RBC, member of the Amherst club, and frequent visitor at Sackville Rotary. Nicole grew up in Sackville, attended TRHS, has a B.Comm. from Mount A, and has travelled extensively. She met her husband in Ottawa and they have three boys: Hudson (5), Gavin (4) and Jack (2 ½). As a student she helped launch the Flying Bean Coffee Shop as part of an entrepreneurship project. In addition to Rotary, she participates in other community groups including Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life. Her favourite quote:
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give” (Winston Churchill).
Nicole’s topic was “Retirement Income Planning” and for her, the Big Question is: Do you have a written plan forecasting income and expenses in retirement to ensure that you don’t run out of money ? It’s never too early to starting planning and to start saving. A financial advisor can help with such things as pension income splitting, effective use of “surplus cash,” setting up a family trust, arranging automatic withdrawals, and a tax-free savings account. Some of the mysteries of minimum RIF/LIF/LRIF/PRIF withdrawal planning, and asset withdrawal order were explained. There are many stratagems available to avoid (but not evade) paying tax.
In response to questions, Nicole agreed that it is important to have financial education in schools. Brought up on “The Wealthy Barber,” she herself is writing a book aimed at high school and undergrad students. She credits the teaching and example of her phenomenal parents for her own success.
Josh (who was thankful she mentioned debt management) thanked the speaker for an interesting and helpful talk.
The meeting closed with the Four Way Test.
