Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin March 8, 2018

Stacey was in the Chair today.  She chose to talk about her faith - Baha'i.

The Bahá’í Faith is an independent world religion that was founded in 1844 and has been present in Canada since 1898.

It is based on the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh, which emphasize the oneness of humanity, the oneness of God and the fundamental oneness of religion.  Canadian Bahá’ís come from diverse backgrounds and are dedicated to the promotion of a global society that reconciles the spiritual and material aspects of life. They work with their friends and neighbours to strengthen communities through the spiritual education of children, the empowerment of young people, the enrichment of the devotional character of community life, and the expansion of capacities for service.

Pat Belliveau was a guest again this week.  She plans to soon resume her membership.  Former guest, Erin Penny was introduced as the Club's newest member.  Her induction will be in April at the Paul Harris evening event.  There were no visiting Rotarians this week.

Makeups were earned by the Gold Mine participants and the Administration Committee members.  I trust that last Sunday's sleigh ride will be treated as if it was Thursday's meeting.  Patricia had an interesting Pin Pal story this week.  It seems that former Mexican exchange student, Fernanda Orpineda (2006-2007) was in contact with Patricia, who will be sending some Sackville things to her after the meeting.  Stacey also had a chance meeting with a librarian in Amherst who is a member of the Amherst Club.  Neither had their pins on, but agreed to count this as a Pin Pal story.

With not having a meeting last Thursday, Dale's birthday on the 6th was not celebrated.  This week 2 more Rotarians can claim another year older.  Frank celebrates on the 12th and Sandy on the 14th.  All three were serenaded with "Happy Birthday", which doesn't work for multiple names.

The 50 / 50 draw was $70 this week and Ove had his ticket drawn.  Looking for the 5 of , he picked the 6 of .  Close but no cigar, no money and no sympathy.  In Happy Dollars, Trish was happy to have her mother visit her last week for a girls weekend...........Dianne was happy to remind everyone that today was International Women's Day and that the new $10 bill with the picture of Viola Desmond on it was going to be unveiled in Halifax later in the day...........Patricia was happy to have had her granddaughter stay with her last week.  Her mother and Patricia's daughter was less enthused about the movie Patricia chose.  She's actually downright mad!..............Louise's daughter Mariah (our Mini Rotarian), has been staying with her grandparents in PEI.  Louise is schedule to go and pick her up on Friday, but the possible storm may prevent it.  Aw shucks!!!  Louise was also happy that the latest biopsy on her father was positive.

The Duty Roster for March 15th is as follows:

Chair - Susan P.    Greeter - Sandy

Introducer - Wynn Thanker - George

Upcoming Meetings Next Week - Fundraising this Friday at noon and the Board next Wednesday.

On behalf of the Admin Committee, Dianne announced that the meeting of April 5th will be held at Open Sky for breakfast and a tour of services.  Dianne also updated the membership on the condition of Charlie's wife Jean.  Following a very rough weekend, Jean was admitted to hospital.  A new surgeon indicated that surgery was the only option and Jeans was operated on Tuesday night.  The operation was a success, but Jean remains in hospital.  Charlie anticipates a long recovery process.  Susan Purdy indicated that members are encouraged to make sure that Charlie and Jean have whatever assistance they need.............Representing the Membership committee, Dale announced that Erin Penny has formally been accepted as a new member.

President John was on his way to Ottawa and VP Louise had no update for President's time.

Wayne had the pleasure of introducing Jamie Burke, Sr.  Manager of Corporate Projects.  An urban planner by vocation, Lamie joined the Town in 2006, having come from the city of Moncton.  In his role he is responsible for Tourism, Special Events and Economic Development.

Jamie started off by thanking the Club for its participation in 2017 of the rebuilding of the booster pump and the lookout in the waterfowl park.  The Town appreciates such partnerships.   In 2018,  the Capital budget for projects over $5K is $1.1 million.  Jamie focused on 3 projects that are aimed at partnering with community groups.  The first was called the Lund Property, land that was gifted to the Town at the end of Princess Street.  Its close approximation makes it a natural extension to the Waterfowl Park but it needs a "bridge" to connect the two properties.  Secondly a project called the Quarry caught the attention of some members as this had come before the club years ago.  As we learned a couple of weeks ago with the Mayor's presentation, the Quarry needs to be developed as a holding pond for the water egress to Lorne Street.  To make this happen, a control valve and berm need to be built.  The Quarry could also then be "beautified" into a walking or relaxation park.  Ultimate cost all in could be in the area of $1.2 million.  The third and last project to be touched on was one near and dear to Rotarians hearts.  It seems that all the equipment in the Lillas Fawcett Rotary Park is no longer suitable from a number fronts and will need to be replaced.  All these projects will probably be considered by the Projects and Legacy Committees.

At the conclusion, Gayle thanked Jamie on behalf of the Club, presenting him with a card-of-thanks and a Rotary pen.  A book will be donated to a local library, noting his presentation to the Club.

The meeting adjourned with the 4-way test.
