Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin July 5, 2018

David chaired this morning’s meeting and presented the results of his work on increasing the transparency and availability of club activities and documents, a project he, as Club Secretary, and President Louise initiated.  He has already emailed the Clubrunner link to members – thank you!

Guests for breakfast were Heather Evans, President of the Sackville & District Assistance Center and Ove’s better half, his wife Pat.    We also welcomed visiting Rotarian Bill McLeish, a member of the Metro Ottawa Club, which is achieving its goal of becoming chartered.  Bill and his wife are buying a Sackville property so we look forward to seeing more of him in the time to come.
No Pin Pal stories or birthdays this week.
Ove was in the right suit this week hoping to win the $119 pot in the 50/50 draw.  Close!  But looking for the Queen of spades and he picked the 7.  Good luck to all next week!
We were a happy crew this week, with Stacey starting us off apologizing for missing the Projects committee meeting with a bout of vertigo (much sympathy from those of us who’ve been there) and then happy to be off work and on her way to her parents’ pool after dropping her son off at camp.  Susan is looking forward to a visit from a returning RYE student.  Edna is vacationing in Ottawa with a leisurely drive back.  Bill is happy to be finalizing his property purchase in Sackville.  Wynnn’s first drive went to a bunker at the Cumberland course (skill, not luck!) and he’s celebrating his 50th anniversary!  Trish really enjoyed Long Point, ON and her visit with Becky and her twins last week. Bill “Bon Mot” Evans immersed himself in family and was lucky enough to spend time with all three of his children in the same week.  Ove is happy to be on his way this week to the QC cottage to spend quality time with his grandchildren.  Dianne is happy to remind all members of the fun that will be had at the PharmaChoice golf tourney, details to follow, and also requests everyone help with meeting set-up and teardown next week in her absence. Wayne is happy to let us know that Charlie’s diagnosis of and treatment for vestibular neuritis should only keep him away from club activities for a few weeks.  Get well soon, Charlie – we all miss you!
This week’s cheque presentation was $597.50 to the Sackville & District Assistance Center.  It was presented by Gayle and gratefully accepted by SDAC President Heather Evans.
Next week’s Duty Roster:
Chairperson:      Darrell
Greeter:              David
Introducer:         Louise
Thanker:              Sandy
There were no committee reports or President’s announcements this week.
Lesley introduced this week’s speaker, Shawn Bostick.
Shawn holds music degrees from Mount A and from St. F/X.  Heavily involved in artistic community initiatives, he’s also a committed father of 2. He has taught music to 9 – 12 year olds in the elementary school system, served as Administrator of Live Bait Theatre, treasurer of Music NB, and established the Atlantic Waves Imprint label while he was the Regional Director of the Canadian Music Centre.  He is now bringing his marketing and administration experience and expertise to bear in developing the annual Sackville Festival of Early Music.    This festival explores classical music from the 6th century to the present, with a focus on the baroque music of 1600 – 1760 and composers such as Bach, Handel  and Vivaldi.  Baroque music drew inspiration from the ornate architecture of the time, exemplified in cathedrals.  We listened to a sample of Bach’s Prelude & Fugue No 18 in G-Sharp Minor played by Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt.  Because of the quality of the administration, the venues and the audiences, the Sackville Festival of Early Music is becoming a destination for international performers.  The Festival has generously offered a pair of complimentary tickets to each Rotary member for a performance during the Festival, which this year runs from Sep 17 – 23, 2018.
Shawn was sincerely thanked by Pam.
The meeting was adjourned by reciting the 4-way-test.
