Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin February 20, 2020
Chair:  Chris Farella took his first time at the podium leading the morning meeting.  Chris spoke persuasively of a path to world peace by referencing excerpts from one of President John Kennedy’s finest speeches, “A Strategy of Peace”.  Club members were reminded by Chris that wars are man-made and therefore it follows that man can provide the solutions that will lead to peace.

We welcomed visiting Rotarians Nicole Naish, Amherst Rotary, Martine Babineau, Rotary Resurgo and Anthony Waddell from the Moncton West & Riverview Club.

There were no pinpal stories/birthdays/committee reports/upcoming meetings this week.

President’s Time:  Marita, President-elect, reported that Rotary International is encouraging volunteer hours from all of its members worldwide.  Please inform our Club Secretary, Edna, of all of the hours you spend in community in Rotary volunteer activities as well as the those spent in club committees, goldmine etc.  Rotary International uses these participation numbers in developing partnership agreements with other organizations to increase our impact in achieving success in the six areas of focus
50/50 Draw:  The pot this week was a healthy $263 and only required the draw of the 10 of Hearts.  It proved elusive, though, with Judy’s draw of the 2 of Clubs.  Better luck to all for next week’s draw!
Happy Toonies:  Pat P is thrilled that her granddaughter's hockey team remains unbeaten......just a little concerned about how they'll learn to deal when they suffer their first loss.....since Wynn is in Florida, Dianne is carrying the curling flag with the news that we're in 2nd place at the World Jrs in Russia and at the Scott Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw, the NS women's team are in the finals and the NB team scored the first 7-ender in Scotty's history, against top-seeded Manitoba.....Bill and Heather managed to snag the last two Air Canada tickets to Ottawa today (using their train ticket refund!).  Thanks to Edna for house and cat sitting......Judy "thanks" Dale and Darryl for the opportunity to pick up the Goldmine boxes, it was quite a all round, for Darryl as well.  Judy is also grateful for the experiential learning environment at MtA on behalf of her son.....Ove and Pat are welcoming their daughter and her family for a visit during Quebec March break.
Louise introduced this weeks’ speakers:  our own Pat Perry, an active Sackville club member and past district governor and currently Chair of our Foundation Committee, and Anthony Waddell, another very involved Rotarian, who along with the many other Rotary projects he has taken on is District 7810 Public Image Chair and is a leader in the effort to eradicate homelessness.
Their presentation centered around “Waging Peace”.  Pat outlined how the 6 areas of focus of Rotary International are the building blocks to developing world peace.  Anthony described some of Rotary’s peace initiatives and the Peace Fellows masters degree programs funded by RI. He called on club members to help by recommending applicants and then providing any help and expertise they can to ensure applicants’ success.

Chris thanked our speakers and the club donated books to local school libraries on their behalf.
