Stories
Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin January 4, 2018

Photographer: Pam

Dianne welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the New Year.

50-50 Draw: Sandy’s number was drawn but she failed to pick the 5 of Spades, so the pot of $17.00 carries forward to next week.

Dianne shared a card received from former RYE student Louis who sent his greetings.  He is busy at university but hopes to see us all soon.

Visiting Rotarian: Nicole from Amherst.

PinPal Stories:  In a stopover on his homeward journey at Houlton, Maine John met Rotarian Leigh Cummings who claimed to have visited Sackville on Rotary business.

Happy Dollars:  George is happy that it is only 4 weeks before he takes off for Florida. Pam is happy to be leaving for Portugal shortly. Edna is still enjoying Christmas.

Next Week: 11 January 2018:  Chair – Marita;  Greeter – John;  Introducer – Susan P;  Thanker – Charlie;  Speaker – Gary Jollymore.

Gold Mine PresentationMatt Estabrooks accepted two cheques from Tammie on behalf of Sackville Minor Hockey.

Toonie CountGayle thanked those who went the extra mile and showed up for the Christmas count.

Adventures in CitizenshipSusan F will be speaking on the program at TRHS next week and would welcome any Rotarians who would like to come along.

Projects Committee:  Stacey reported that a sub-committee has been formed to evaluate local projects.  Two $105 bursaries have been given to Wild Wonder for their winter program.  $250 has been allocated for a literacy project in Guatemala.

President’s Time:  John was away for two days and when he returned had 142 emails from the District Secretary.

Speaker: Stacey introduced Andy Marr of Charles Street Financial Inc, who gave a presentation on “Budgeting.” What is the #1 cause of stress in people’s lives today ?  What is the #1 cause of marriage breakups ?  You’ve guessed it – money (and the failure to handle it properly).  Too many people think their finances will take care of themselves.  We need to manage our money, not let our money manage us.  It’s not what you make that counts, it’s what you keep.

It is essential to have a clear plan and get help in managing your finances properly. A sample “Statement of Income and Expenses” sheet was circulated. Keep track of debt and budget enough to pay off your debts, starting with the highest interest items. There are hopeful signs that some of the next generation (18-30) are prepared to live on less, and do more with less.

The question of giving to charity was raised.  On average Canadians give only a meagre $470 per year. Others budget a percentage.  With income tax receipts most people get back about 45-50% of what they give.

The speaker also praised the entrepreneurs, especially the younger ones, in our area. The future of our economy depends on them.  New Brunswick should encourage more people from the rest of the country to come here where we have cheap land, inexpensive housing and resilient people.

In thanking the speaker Bill quoted Mr Micawber's famous recipe for happiness: "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result misery."

The meeting concluded with the Four-Way Test.
