Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin  February 15/18

You will note that the bulletin backup team was put into motion today as our regular Bulletin editor - Charlie - is otherwise occupied.  That is to say that he is running the roads to the Moncton Hospital to visit wife Jean as she awaits some surgery.  The whole Club wishes her the best and a speedy recovery.  Go Get Em Jean!!!
New to the Club but not new to Rotary was Pat Perry who was in the Chair this morning.  She was born in Blue Mountain Bend NB (Rte 385 near Plaster Rock) along with 2 brothers and 1 sister.  A banker (CIBC), she also early on mined gold in the Yukon, and circulated a beautiful necklace with a gold nugget in the middle.  After marrying, her road took her to Miramichi, where she joined Rotary becoming club President and District Governor.  Sadly she became a widow in 2011 but has since met a Sackvillian, which is why she is now a part of our Club.
We had 2 guests today.  Jamie introduced us to Leslie Lawton, who recently moved to Town.  Wayne had as his guest, Erin Penny, an instructor in the Biology Department on MTA.  Both ladies are thinking about joining and were "checking us out".  Also visiting us today was Nicole Naish, a member of the Amherst club.
On the Pin-Pal Story front, Pat recalled a visit to Hamilton ON and while walking down the street, was "propositioned" into coming to a Rotary meeting from a fellow walker and total stranger. He turned out to be a Rotarian.
There were no Birthdays this week, but last week Edna celebrated another year.  She was toasted in song.
Edna noted that this weeks draw was for $53.  Her ticket was chosen and while she looked for the 5 of , she picked the 8 of .  Close but no cigar!
The were more than a few Happy Dollars today.......Louise was happy that her dad in PEI had surgery for cancer and seems to be on the mend.........Josh was giggly happy to announce that he and Christine will be parents later this year.........Dale was happy to show a picture of his newest grandson, who is 1 month old today.........Ove apologized for the scruffy look.  No, he is not becoming a hippie - he had surgery a couple of weeks ago and is not allowed to shave...........Dianne was happy to announce that the Rotary Curling team placed 2nd at the recent bonspiel and that she was declared the largest single fundraiser.  She thanked the members who donated...........Susan F. was happy that the GB's have gone home to TO, one day late after their original flight was cancelled.  Ah the peace and quiet!!!..........Marita was happy that daughter Kalika turns 30 today and its is also the 13th anniversary of her accident.  Does that mean she is still a teenager????.......John was happy to acknowledge his participation in the Marshview Meals program over the last 3 weeks.  Each day he was scheduled, school was cancelled.  He loves the job..........Pat was happy that a district Rotarian will donate $1 million dollars.  The Gates foundation will match it.
The Gold Mine week was busy with 2 of our winners present this week.  After 4 weeks on non-winners, Kathy Cormier's name was picked from the drum and took home $6,214 for her troubles.  Kathy is shown with her grandson Gauvin Estabrooks.  The Charity-of-the-Week was Sackville Minor Hockey with Matt Blair and his son Mathew, picking up a cheque for $703.
Next Weeks meeting will be a special meeting that John will Chair and Morgan will be the Greeter.  No committee meetings are scheduled.
Under committee reports, the Foundation Committee Chair Dave took a minute to introduce new and potential new members to the jars that collect pocket change and will eventually be donated in the members name to the Rotary Foundation..........On behalf of the Youth Services committee, Susan announced that Catherine Premier was selected to go on the Adventures in Citizenship exchange this year.............Louise indicated that at a recent pre - PETS/SETS District meeting, our club was acknowledged the highest per cappa donator to the Rotary Foundation in the District.
In President's Time, John noted that 85 town's people attended last Sunday's Make Something at the Owen's Gallery.  John also advised members of a recent decision of the Administration committee that members are not allowed to sit in the same place two weeks in a row.  This encourages the commeradrie of Rotary.
Tony was the introducer this week and his job was to introduce His Worship, the Mayor of Sackville, John Higham.  John's topic was to highlight some of the large projects going on in the Town this last year and what needs to be done in the future.  Flooding in the Lorne Street area of Town has been and ongoing problem since 1914.  The flooding stems from fresh water events (major storms) and the problems associated with getting this water to flow to the Bay of Fundy.  The old abioteaus no longer work and some are hidden by vegetation.  To begin the process, Phase 1 was initiated and Lorne Street and Saint James Street were rebuilt this past summer with all new infrastructure, designed to go to Phase 2.  Phase 2 will allow ponds to be constructed that will capture and hold excess water prior to directing it to the Bay of Fundy.  There will be 2 ponds - 1 adjacent to the Lorne Street (Between Main and Saint James) and will be similar to the current waterfowl park, complete with walking trails.  The second will be to the west of Saint james Street and will hold the excess water destined to go to rebuilt aboiteaus.    The intersection of highway 106 and route 935 to Westcock is also a major source of flooding, as the tunnels under the highway and rail lines are blocked, leaving no place for the water to run to (it should go to the Bay of Fundy).  It is expected that this work will be done this year.
The Quarry is another source of water going to the Lorne Street area by underground tunnels.  It is hope that this can be developed into a retention pond and park.  Finally, major issues are evident at any high tide - the dykes built 300 years ago that keep water away from the TCH and CN rail lines.  It is estimated that $100 million will be required to fix this problem, equivalent to 2 days of commerce that passes the area.  John and the mayor of Amherst are addressing this issue with the appropriate governments and the 2 governments are now beginning a new study expected to last 1 1/2 years.  Action may not wait for another 1 1/2 years.
Mayor John was thanks by Dianne for his presentation.
The meeting concluded with the 4-way-test.
