Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin July 26, 2018

Today was Erin’s first time as Chair. As a SHAD Program Co-Director this year, Erin enthusiastically spoke to us about this summer enrichment program, which was hosted this year for the first time at Mount A.  It is held at 16 university campuses across Canada each summer to empower exceptional Grade 10 – 12 students by focussing on SHAD’s core values of creativity, excellence, community, diversity and responsibility.
Our guests for breakfast this week were former RYE student Bente and one of her Sackville host families, Louis Belliveau and Rima Azar.  Club members were delighted to see them and to enjoy Bente’s treat of Dutch cookies.
Bill recounted his encounter with form Club member, Joyce Ferguson, as a Pin Pal story.
    Happy 77th birthday, Ove!!!
The 50/50 pot stands at $149.00 and is still growing, as Louise drew the Ace of Hearts in pursuit of the Queen of Spades.
Happy Toonies:
Pat’s daughter is coming to her mom’s house for a birthday dinner of her favourite dishes, lovingly prepared…..Trish’s excitement is building as she and Bruce are heading to Ontario for 4 weeks on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. for visits with family and friends….Ove is off to the Laurentians to enjoy his grandchildren – Pat’s looking forward to his help!  Louise is also going away for vacation and is looking forward to 2 weeks of relaxed family time at their NS cottage.

Legacy:  The Legacy committee met yesterday at noon to begin the process of narrowing down potential projects to 4 to present on Nov 24th for the Club’s consideration.
Breakfast:  Trish could bear the uncertainty no longer and volunteered to spearhead the Fall Breakfast.  Lesley offered to help her and learn the ropes.  Former Chairs Dale & Wayne will assist in the background.
President Louise thanked Dale for his Ten Years of Service to the Club.
President’s Time:
The Board met last evening and are down 3 positions.  Louise asked anyone interested in joining the board to speak with her about what’s involved.  She also reminded us that George is keen to pass the baton as Chair of the Membership committee, if someone could please step up for that.

Louise introduced this week’s speaker, Dane Sheppard, Director of Technology at The Black Arcs, Fredericton.
Dane discussed his company’s software, a cloud-based scenario tool that enables citizens, policy-makers and land developers to visualize possibilities and test-drive different strategies around planning decisions that shape our neighbourhoods and impact our lifestyles.    He demonstrated this interactive city simulator with an example of merging the three Sackville public schools to one location at THS and showed the impacts of the resulting vehicle and foot traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. Trish asked for clarification of the statistics and research used to create the projections.  Josh offered the thought that the area of greenspaces and the number of trees could be factored in to fine-tune greenhouse gas estimates.  It was an interesting and informative look at land use planning and its impact on communities.
Stacey thanked Dane for his presentation.
The meeting concluded with the recitation of the four-way-test.
