Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin - November 8, 2018

ChairPam led the club in the singing of the national anthem and a prayer.  She encouraged all members to read this month’s Rotarian and note its informative articles on the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.  Pam informed us of the role of Rotary in the initial development of the United Nations as Rotary International was already heavily involved in reducing the causes of war and aggression.  We watched a short film of Rotary’s humanitarian impact in the world.  Be the inspiration!  Please keep in mind that November is Foundation month.
Dictionaries have been handed out to happy recipients at Dorchester School (Wayne, please include pic as per Pam’s request)
Club members signed sympathy cards to Bill and Trish Edwards and families on the tragic news of the car accident in Ontario taking the lives of Bill’s brother Don and Don’s son Spencer.  Local and national football associations will feel the loss but most poignantly felt will be the family loss of a father, brother and husband.  Our sympathies go to the immediate and extended families of Don and Spencer.
Guests:  We welcomed Brittany Knox and Goldmine winner Natasha Walton.
Cheque Presentations:
A very happy Natasha Walton was the Goldmine winner and received a cheque for $12,900 – Natasha is spreading the love; she’ll be purchasing a new washing machine for her parents.

Speaker:

Bill introduced Bill Green, a retired banker, who spoke to us on the topic:  Lest We Forget.  His group – Remembering Canada’s Heroes – seeks to pass on little known accomplishments of the Canadian Forces during both World Wars.  Their primary audiences are high school students.  Bill talked today about how U-boats found in the Saint Laurence river were stopped from sinking maximum ships.  In the Atlantic Ocean, the Canadian merchant marine insured that needed supplies to the Allies got to their destination.  Had they failed, the outcome of the War may have very different.  Or how about the story of George Evans who at 15 signed on with the Norwegian freighter DS EINVIK which was sunk by U-501 and he had to spend 10 days in an open lifeboat rowing to Iceland.  Similarily,  Sailor Eugene Tobin who told his story of Atlantic service in HMCS CHAMBLY on patrol off Greenland with HMCS MOOSE JAW in Sept. 1941 when their sonar detected a U-Boat contact.  Both ships dropped depth charges and the sub was brought to the surface and crew taken off. Eugene and 5 others from CHAMBLY were tasked with boarding the sub to seek out the Code Books and Enigma Machine in the radio room. Unfortunately, the U-Boat was filling with water rapidly and they had to exit without Enigma. Sadly, one RCN sailor perished on the sub.
Bill left 2 DVD’s with the Club for those who want more information.  Wayne has the DVD’s.
Bill was thanked by David McKellar and presented him with a pen and certificate.  A book will be donated to a local library in his name.
The meeting concluded with the 4-way-test
